Canada’s Rectangle

Group Show
October 14 – December 2, 2017

Opening Reception:
Saturday, October 14th, 7pm

This fall, Neutral Ground presents Canada’s Rectangle, an exhibition featuring recent work by eight Saskatchewan artists. Seeking to examine contemporary regional artistic production, the participants were selected from an open call by a local jury. Tapping into the variety of practices and artistic concerns rooted in our province, Canada’s Rectangle samples both emerging and more established artists. While the exhibition’s parameters are delineated by Saskatchewan’s rather geometric borders, it also reveals work that extends far beyond them.

Through a self-made and populated extraterrestrial world, Zoë Schneider’s protagonist creates the space she desires and deserves. The inclusive and intimate space of Jaye Kovach’s magic circle will be the site of ritualised tattooing performances, part of a practice that draws on her exploration of marginalised transgender experiences and their undervalued systems of labour. Social practice and environmental engagement is also at the heart of Amber Phelps Bondaroff’s activities. Here, she playfully explores the sometimes strained relationship between body and space through wearable sculpture and video. Cam Forbes’ ways of seeing reflect on the interior and exterior world of painterly traditions, using intriguing framing devices. The complexities of indigeneity and the power of self-representation are investigated in Cruz Anderson’s large-scale drawings, while Jessica Morgun uses graphite’s ephemerality to bring absence into being. Through video, Nic Wilson locates absurdity, boredom and pathos around the state of human mortality. And in the work of collage duo Phomohobes, the language of retro aspirational advertising mutates into surreal mythologies that unsettle notions of corporeality, gender and the artifact.

Join us for the opening reception and artist talks by Jessica Morgun and Phomohobes, plus a performance by Jaye Kovach, on Saturday, October 14th!
