Chantal Dumas

8:00pm – Reception to follow concert

Neutral Ground is pleased to present Canadian sound artist, Chantal Dumas, as part of the New Music Concert Series IV. Chantal Dumas explores the medium of sound through the production of radiophonic fictions or docu-fictions (Hoerspiel), electroacoustic musics and sound installations. Dumas uses sound to chart a new approach to listening and perception. Combining music, narrative, and real-world sounds, she constructs stories that encourage listeners to establish their own sense of a narrative. Her work invites listeners on a ramble through various spaces: mental and physical, architectural and urban, natural and cultural.

She has produced over 25 radio pieces. Her music and radio works have been presented in Europe, Canada, the United-States and the Australia. Her most recent radio piece, Les petits riens – mecanique du quotidien received the Prix Bohemia (Czeck Republic, Oct. 10) and the Prix opus for the best electroacoustic concert (Montreal, jan. 11).

In parallel to her musical and radio works, Dumas creates sound installations that question the relationship between mobility, sound, space and the listener. Her most recent installation, Le vivant bruit du corps, is an interactive immersive sound installation which stages two wooden chairs from which a whole universe of sound emerges.

Dumas has recently been commissioned by/presented at: Kunstradio (ORF, Austria), DeutschlandRadio Berlin, Hessischer Rundfunk, SFB radio (D), CBC (CDN), silenceradio.org (Bxls/BE), Espace du son Radio-Canada, la RSR Couleur 3 (Swizerland), AVATAR (Qc), radio grenouille (Marseilles/F), Communaute electroacoustique canadienne (CEC), NAISA (Toronto), Open Space Gallery (Victoria-BC), Quartier ephemere (Mtl), La Muse en Circuit (Paris/F), Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago/USA.

Her work can be found on CD at 326 (France), AVATAR/Ohm Editions (Quebec), and PoGUS & Nonsequitur (USA).
